There are many resources and services available at the CMU libraries. Here are a few basic orientation slides about Using the Libraries.
The librarians are available for remote/virtual research consultations as well as classroom visits. Additionally, they can assist you with any needed purchases for teaching or research and connect you with other specialists across the libraries as needed.
There are also many specialized resources available to faculty, staff and students, such as Research Metrics Services, Research Data Management, Open Science & Data Collaborations and Evidence Synthesis Services. You can sign up for the University Libraries’ newsletter for monthly features, tips, news, service and collections updates.

Erin Higgins, the designated librarian for HCII, is the best first point of contact if you are unsure with whom to speak regarding library resources and support.
Open Access updates
The CMU Libraries support Open Access publishing in many ways. The Libraries have Open Access agreements with various publishers, such as, Elsevier, ACM, PLoS, Cambridge and Wiley. Any CMU corresponding author publishing their work in the journals and some proceedings published by these publishers is eligible for the default open access publishing option and no APC fund is needed. Articles in Open Access journals without a CMU corresponding author can still be made OA using the Libraries’ APC fund to pay some of the OA publishing fees. If you are a corresponding author publishing in an open journal or hybrid journal with intentions to move to open outside of the publishers above, you may be eligible for support from our Article Processing Charge Fund.
Resources
- The Libraries Catalog contains records for the majority of our physical and digital collections. Resource types include: books, peer-reviewed articles, eBooks, journals, music scores, audio CDs, conference proceedings, reports, government documents, film, dissertations, theses, newspaper articles, book reviews and digital images.
- If you need access to materials that CMU does not own, you may be able to request materials from other institutions using the ILLiad or E-Z Borrow Services.
- Reserve a spot for quiet or collaborative study in Hunt or Sorrells libraries using the seat and study room reservation system.
- Explore our growing technology collection of devices that are available for you to borrow, including iPads, calculators, charging cables, headphones, portable DVD drives, music foot pedals and more.
- All CMU faculty, staff and students can access The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette web content through the library.
- The Libraries’ unique and rare collections housed in the University Archives and Special Collections preserve and share the legacy of CMU for generations to come.
- Public workshops are being offered either in person or virtually this semester. Find sessions on topics like data visualization, R, data and citation management, citizen science and more. Explore the events calendar to see what else is coming up.
- Faculty and researchers can publish their work open access free of charge with many publishers thanks to the Open Access agreements.
- Scholars@CMU is a profile service supported by Elements that allows faculty to curate a scholarly profile and indicate their willingness and availability for media appearances and journalistic or other public engagements. View the self-help guide or see examples to get started.
